The Appraisal District Board of Directors Role in the Property Tax System

The local property tax system follows the principle of checks and balances. The appraisal district Board of Directors hire the chief appraiser, adopts the annual district budget, and ensures that the district follows policies and procedures set by law.  The directors have no authority to set values or appraisal methods and cannot make decisions that affect the appraisal records. The chief appraiser carries out the appraisal district’s legal duties, hires the staff, makes the appraisals, and operates the appraisal office.

The Gillespie CAD Board is composed of five directors appointed by the governing boards of the taxing entities (city, county, and school districts) whose jurisdictions lie within the appraisal district.  Appointments for a two-year term are made in the fall of odd-numbered years through a nomination and voting process by the taxing entities.

Gillespie CAD holds its regularly scheduled monthly meetings generally on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. These meetings are subject to change based on Board member availability and scheduling conflicts. There may be special meetings held throughout the year as required.  Timely notice will be posted as required by law. The Gillespie CAD Board meets in the Board Room of the Gillespie CAD office at 1159 South Milam Street in Fredericksburg, Texas.
